How Jeanessa Got Scammed

My first low carb diet was in 1998.  I was 19 years old, 193 pounds and determined to lose some weight!  A co-worker was doing Atkins and dropped 15 pounds in two weeks with very little effort.  I wanted to be like her.

So, I bought the Atkins book, read it from cover to cover and started low-carbing.  I lost about 25 pounds the first 3 weeks.   I went off the diet and sustained my loss for about six months before I quit and gained it all back plus some over the next nine years.

I gave thought to dieting again from time to time, joined Low Carb Friends (LCF) in 2004 and ALF around then.  I joined other sites as well, posted and tried to get going, but mostly lurked.  It was at LCF that I saw Kimmer’s posts.

She wrote very eloquently and seemed to show a lot of knowledge about low-carbing and dieting in general.  And she had lost a TON of weight: 198 pounds.  I thought her story was one of the great low carb successes that you read about and that was that.

I took a break from lurking for awhile and when I came back, Kimmer was in full force at LCF.  I found out about Kimkins when I saw a poster on LCF with the word Kimkins in the WOE portion of their profile.  Well, I looked up Kimkins and read all I could.  I read many of Kimmer’s posts and sucked up everything she had to say like a sponge.  But the diet looked pretty strict and I was of the opinion at that time that I needed something I could really and truly sustain for life, so I decided not to try it.

Several months later, a very close aunt of mine had a massive stroke at the age of 53 that left her in a wheelchair and partially paralyzed.  Within a few months of that, my moma had breathing problems and I rushed her to the ER.  I sat with her in triage for four hours and on February 23, 2007, she was diagnosed with lung cancer and given months to live.

I cried myself sick for days, but I got up.  I put a smile on my face and became an even better daughter to my mother.  I also looked myself in the eye and said, “Jeanessa, its time to do something about your weight.”

I decided to visit some of my infrequent haunts.  When I went to LCF, I saw that Kimkins had its own section and when I went there and lurked, someone said that Kimmer had started her own site called Kimkins and when I visited Jimmy Moore’s blog, he had some Kimkins success stories listed and a link.

On March 20, 2007, I signed up.

I spent several days reading posts and figuring out what would work for me to eat on the diet plan.  I saw people’s pictures and got excited!  People were really losing weight, so it had to be awesome.  Then, I read some people’s fitday journals and I paused. When I first saw 300 and 500 calorie day entries, I thought that maybe people just weren’t inputting all of their daily intake into fitday. Then, I saw 300 calories, 500 calories for whole months at a time!

But…it was working and Kimmer seemed so adamant about it being safe and sustainable.  So many others had success.  I rifled through all of the success stories for inspiration and decided to get started.

I boiled up a batch of eggs and grilled chicken breasts and cut them into strips on my George Foreman.  I bought cans of tuna in water and Bumblebee chicken.  I bought iceberg lettuce and Wishbone Spritzer salad dressing.  I bought a case of Diet Rite soda.  I was ready to get started.

By noon of day two, I was so dizzy that I couldn’t stand.  My hands were shaking.  I felt like I was going to puke every time I so much as smelled a food-like substance.  I posted on Kimkins about SNATT and asked how long it took to get over SNATT and received a few encouraging responses.

I forged ahead.  It would be worth it to lose the weight.  By the time I got home, all I could do was park the car and sit there.  It took me a few minutes to make it into the house and when I did my husband took one look at me and said, “Nope, you’re not doing this diet.  Eat something now.  You can find another one to do.”

So, ended my foray into Kimkins.

I started to look around Kimkins with new eyes, ones that were no longer desperate for weight loss.  The calories and the benefits just didn’t add up.  There was no place to dissent on the Kimkins.com site and the few posts I read on LCF were immediately denounced.  I went to Jimmy’s blog.  He seemed like a nice reasonable guy and I trusted his advice.  So, I posted a comment on one of his Kimkins posts, asking how 500 calories could be healthy.

Jimmy told me that Kimkins did not advocate 500 calories.  And then Kimmer chimed in and asked me if I was afraid of Starvation Mode.  She referred me to an article she had written on Starvation Mode, describing how it did not exist.  She went on to say that I could wake up with diabetes one day and that would be irreversible.  No one else voiced anything in support of my question.  I felt well and truly silenced.

A while later, I read a blog, A Pinch Of, and she questioned Kimkins!  It rang so true for me and I posted there, thanking her for voicing a concern that I had.  How could 500 calories, low carb, unsupervised be this miracle diet that everyone was so excited about?

Within a few weeks, the Why the Fascination Thread became prominent and so many of us got the opportunity to come together and voice our concerns and see that we really did have the same questions and that something just wasn’t right.

Kimkins Survivors opened and my heart bled for those women who had been “tough enough” to sustain the diet.  I was so glad that I felt so awful those first few days and that my husband had voiced his concerns.

Then, Slamboard posted the pictures of Heidi K. Diaz, Kimmer, who I had always known to be Heidi from her LCF days.  And I posted in support of KimPossible after seeing her attacked for asking questions on the Kimkins website.  I was immediately banned without any warning or notice.  My request for a refund was denied.

It occured to me then, that Heidi had no intention of fessing up, of acknowledging the affect of her diet or addressing the allegations of fraud.

What a way to do business!  It became clear to me that she wasn’t going to address our concerns and neither was she going to stop without some outside assistance.  So, I contacted John.

Every one of our voices counts and is necessary.  We are not a means to an end, expendable or easily silenced.  Please join me in the fight to stop others from being scammed.

So, how did you get scammed?

There’s an emotionally fragile gal about to do Kimkins for “two to three” months. I’ve posted twice on her blog to try and avoid her having to go through what you went short-term or others longer-term. I hope she listens. I put a link to your story.

Her blog is “She will be Loved”

I feel bad for her reading her desperation…cause Kimkins is a pit for the desperate. Sigh.

I got scammed because I didn’t know anything about LC eating. I read the article in WW magazine and something clicked. My cousin had lost a lot of weight doing atkins a few years ago, but my only impressions of atkins were of butter, cream cheese and pork rinds. I saw some message board a few years ago (not any of the main players we have now) where the people were sharing recipes that I just could not understand how they could be healthy. But the magazine article made sense, LC, but cut out the stuff that was supposedly so bad. I joined Kimkins on 6-6-07, my 10th anniversary, because I needed to lose 60 lbs and I wanted to be skinny like I was when I first got married. I lurked for a few days and printed everything out and read it over and over. I started on 6-11-07 and I decided to do K/E for 5 days and then switch to regular kimkins. That was the worst 5 days of my life almost. Every day it was all I could do to just go to work and come home and go to bed. When that Friday came, I was so glad, but it still took another 4 or 5 days to feel normal again. Then I found that I could not give up a little cheese every day. I couldn’t bring myself to use those spritzers because they have high fructose corn syrup in them. How could that be good for you. I could not give up my green goddess dressing. I couldn’t eat tuna or egg salad without mayonnaise, and I have a spray pump of olive oil that I would cook with. So I guess I was tweaking kimkins to make it work for me because otherwise it was making me sick. However, after 6 weeks and 20 lbs lost, I stalled. After about three weeks of that, I was starting to get discouraged. The diet was boring. I had my little tweaks but that was about it. Then one day, I saw a post in the Kimkins cafe that didn’t have a title. So I checked it out. This was at the end of July. The first post was blank and then the next one didn’t make sense. It said something like”I don’t think we are going to bring that up here so we don’t have negativity”. I noticed the second poster’s title said “Jimmy Moore leaves Kimkins”. I was curious so I went over to Jimmy’s site (I had never been there before and didn’t really know who he was) and found his first interviews with Kimmer. In reading the comments posted below his blog I found Slamboard, Ducky, LCF fascination thread, everything that was available at the time. Also, this was two days before Jimmy’s big apology. Needless to say it took me several days to go thru everything and I realized right away I had been scammed. I learned so much from the people at LCF about the dangers of VLCD’s and thyroid and metabolism, etc. I saw right away why I had stalled. I certainly wasn’t going to cut my calories even more because I was already eating the most boring diet. I decided to buy the Atkins book and switch to it. I posted a message on the kk site about my feelings and got pages of We love Kimmer, if the diet is working who cares, maybe you are just too emotionally fragile to handle this, etc. I didn’t go back over there much after that, but joined the other groups to start learning about true LC eating and also to keep up with the controversy. I was finally banned from kimkins because I couldn’t keep quiet anymore. Someone had a post about the schoolyard bullies ruining it for the rest of them and it was on top in the cafe for a long time. A couple of people had cheered that person on, but that was all. Here is my final post:

You are all ignoring the giant elephant in the room. Your weight loss has been fabulous and the credit all goes to each of you that has done the hard work. Don’t give it up and don’t give each other up but, please find another place to share your successes with all your friends because every moment spent here gives legitimacy to the fraud being committed by Heidi Diaz, also known as Kimmer. There are plenty of places to go with your groups. Becky is posting in a good place and she would love to see a lot of her friends and acquaintences there. Deni, Amy (curlygirl), and KimATC and even Pretty Paula have been posting at other places and people have actually talked to them there and welcomed them there. We simply cannot continue to legitimize the business fraud that is taking place here by a continued presence. Please don’t continue to ignore it. Start to establish your groups elsewhere while you still can because some things are going to happen really soon.

I posted it in two places and it was quickly found. I was banned about 10 minutes after I had posted it. I had a strange mixture of sadness and relief over that because I really had wanted to believe it. Since I transitioned to Atkins on Aug 6, I have gained and lost the same 2 or 3 pounds. I don’t really know what the problem is, except for the long 4 day labor day vacation I took (we all know how that goes) and I have cheated a couple of times only and just for one meal, not a long extended binge. I still have about 30 lbs to go, but I’m not discouraged. I’m not giving up the LC life. Now that I know how to do it right, I am really enjoying it. As I learn more about LC, I might try some other things, but the key word is learn. I took the word of magazine that profiled a scam artist and lost my money and possibly damaged my metabolism because I didn’t learn all I could before I started.

I thank heavens never followed her program.. but read about it from time to time and heard folks swear by it… her ignorance is amazing especially in this one line ” She went on to say that I could wake up with diabetes one day and that would be irreversible” thats bs… many obese folks have all together gotten off diabetic meds because they have correcting things by eating healthy.. the effects of Diabetes may not be reversable.. but you can control and virtually stop the need for meds.. what a moron the woman is.. Kimkins.. Heidi what ever or whoever she is.. i feel tremendously sad for the folks that got douped by her… I hope you guys who are involved in this lawsuit get something back… Revenge would be sweet.. and your money would be ideal.
    Wishing you luck!!!

Hey Jeanessa! Thank you for your story. I’m so sorry for what you are going through with your mom. I hope you are both hanging in there. My wake up call was my mom having 2 heart attacks, double bypass surgery and then being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes all before she was 50 years old.

I also have a fiance who sat me down and absolutely forbid me to continue on Kimkins. The first time he has ever done anything like that. He did it the first time in April when I first joined. Then hardheaded me thought I’d do it again, but not start with K/E and ease into it this time…the only difference was I actually passed out the second time and it took 6 days instead of 2 to feel the horrible effects of that diet. So once again, the man who supports me in everything I do in my life put his foot down. I didn’t need him to tell me again and this time I had my on line friends to reinforce what I kind of knew, but didn’t want to admit…I had been conned.

Thank God we both have supportive men in our lives! You sound like you have a good one to lean on like I do. Thank you also for all the work you’re doing on the class action suit. You are one person I would always want on my side!!!

The “Time Worstall Tabloid Edition” says:

    November 12, 2007
    Kimkins
Kimkins, or the Kimkins diet has been shown up to be just another scam on the unsuspecting.

Heidi “Kimmer” Diaz, the founder of the Kimkin’s diet – a low carb, low calorie diet – is schedule to appear in a Southern California court on Monday, November 12th, 2007. 11 former users of her Kimkins diet program filed a complaint against her one week ago, claiming fraud, false advertising, and unjust enrichment.
The Kimkin’s scandal began when Woman’s World, a popular women’s magazine featured an article on the Kimkin’s diet.

Ms Diaz, who was claiming to have lost 198 pounds in 11 months using her diet plan, refused to meet with the magazine in person, instead corresponding through email. She went so far as to send the magazine before and after pictures that looked nothing alike, which makes sense when people found out that the before pictures were Ms. Diaz, however the after pictures were taken from a Russian ‘mail-order’ bride web site.

The kimkins diet advised eating just 500 calories a day. That less than concentration camp victims were getting:

Kimkins diet followers reported hair loss, menstrual cessation, irregualr heartbeat, fainting spells, and liver damage from the starvation diet scam.

No damn wonder! Let’s hope she’s jailed where she can get a decent diet!
